What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision disability is one of the top ten disabilities in the United States among adults age 18 and over. While some types of vision issues can only be corrected with lenses or eye surgery, vision therapy is usually used as part of a treatment plan to strengthen eye muscles and improve vision and depth perception.

At A+ Vision Optometry in Ladera Beach, California, Dr. Monique Nguyen offers vision therapy, in tandem with other treatments for faster and enhanced results. So, what exactly is vision therapy? It's a non-surgical treatment plan that basically teaches your vision to correct itself.

Binocular function

Vision therapy is a type of physical therapy that helps improve binocular function. Binocular function is the ability to focus on an object with both eyes and send compatible images to the brain to create a single coherent image.

If one or both eyes can’t focus properly, the image can be blurry or depth perception might be absent. This malfunction is often called amblyopia (lazy eye) which can be caused by strabismus (a condition in which the eyes don’t properly align.)

Children with poor binocular function can have difficulty at school. They can even start to lose vision in the affected eye since the brain will start ignoring the images from that eye. In fact, amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in children

If Dr. Nguyen thinks you or your child could benefit from vision therapy, she will create sets of exercises designed to target your specific issue. These exercises will be explained to you in greater detail during your sessions, which are typically between 30 to 60 minutes long.
